In a recent client interaction with a corporate leadership team, I witnessed this in action. I was hired to assist the team in resolving a variety of problems, challenges, and opportunities for the company. Our plan was to focus on a collection of goals, since they can’t do anything, even though they are wildly popular. I loved working with this group because the company’s leader was a true consensus builder.
Dictatorship is extremely efficient. One individual makes all of the decisions and issues all of the directives, and everyone else is supposed to simply follow them. Although that may be very effective in the short term, it is ineffective in the long run. This is due to the fact that people are unable to buy into proposals on which they had no input. They don’t contribute their ideas, so the company’s future is constrained by one person’s ideas and someone else’s half-hearted execution. Why do it half-heartedly? People don’t give their best because they don’t feel like they were a part of the decision-making process, after all.
