I’m a beginner with little knowledge of technical terminology, but I’ve scanned hundreds of 35mm and medium format negatives using Nikon CoolScan and Epson V500 and V550 flatbeds to get the highest quality RAW files at presets set up for me by others.
Are there any quality issues (channels, colour, info, etc.) with these images because they were scanned upside down, and they need to be rescanned for the best possible image? Is it possible to simply flip these pictures in Photoshop and make them have the same quality as if I had scanned them right side up?
It depends on what you were scanning and at what resolution, but scanning them upside down generally results in a slight loss of sharpness. If the scanned photos seem to be in good condition, it’s probably not worth the trouble to check them again.
The biggest disadvantage of scanning them backwards (film base down) is that the emulsion layers could be out of sight for the scanner. Epson scanners come with stock trays that place the film at the proper distance for scanning in focus, whether right side up or upside down. However, since the registration distance for film scanning is within a millimeter range a few millimeters above the scanning bed, if you were scanning on third-party trays or thicker mediums like glass plates, you might have trouble keeping the scanner focused during a scan. You’re more likely to get poor scans because of film curling in the trays than because of film orientation.
