The aim of this study is to examine students’ perceptions of the efficacy of business games as an e-learning tool in management education. Via a study of students’ views in various cultural contexts around Europe, this review of game effectiveness focuses on the generic and managerial skills gained.
Methodology/design: The study focuses on 120 postgraduate management students from five European countries who use the same business game at different universities: Spain, Ireland, Portugal, Italy, and Germany.
Conclusions: The findings show that students rated the business game’s generic and unique managerial skills as positive. Knowledge and decision-making, as well as leadership, were the most highly regarded generic skills. In terms of technical skills, management skills were the most valued, while preparation and analytical information acquisition skills were the least valued. In the case of some basic management skills, however, major variations were observed between students from various cultural backgrounds and educational systems.

[1] Instead of just gaming or just simulation, the business gaming community seems to have recently adopted the term business simulation game. For educational purposes, the word simulation is often thought to be too mechanistic. Although this is not normally the aim of an educational game, simulation often refers to activities in which an optimum for some problem is sought. On the other hand, the word game can connote wasting time, not taking things too seriously, and participating in a strictly recreational activity.
