When does a coin cease to be a coin? As minting technology has provided for ever more ambitious designs to appear for sale, it’s a topic we hear a lot about. There are purist collectors who claim that a coin should be round and strike cleanly. That, in our view, is a too narrow description, given that coins have varied in shape throughout history. Furthermore, why should numismatics be any different?
That isn’t to say that coin designs should be unrestricted, but each collector would have their own opinion about when a coin ceases to be collectible to them. The note-coin is a relatively new format that looks like it will be receiving some publicity this year. These are struck in silver and normally coloured on at least one face, and resemble banknotes in size and design. Last year, German dealer MDM released two series, one with a US theme and the other with a Chinese theme, but neither had a denomination, so they weren’t strictly coins. We know of at least two other producers interested in launching in this format, but Coin Invest Trust is the first to do so with Skyline Dollars.

Just a few businesses have had as much influence on the world of coins as CIT Coin Invest, a think tank based in Liechtenstein. Many of the concepts developed by the company for the first time on commemorative coins issued by exotic countries have since made their way into the world of conventional commemorative coins, and are now even seen on circulation coins. Color application is the most effective technique that CIT Coin Invest has co-initiated. However, this isn’t the company’s only illustrious segment.
Many mints realized the opportunity for commemorative coins in the middle of the 1980s. Their coins entered the market, coinciding with a drop in investor interest in investment goods. As a result, several coin dealers went out of business.
CIT Coin Invest forged its own path during this period. The company’s management decided to produce its own items after gaining a thorough understanding of collector tastes. The first was released in 1982: a Zurich shooting taler with platinum and palladium off-strikes that sold extremely well, especially in the United States.
