🔔 David marcus federalist bio

What is the concept of a generation? Surely it isn’t just a matter of age or genetics, but something more—a mutual dissatisfaction with the state of the planet and a desire to change it. Occupy Wall Street, Black Lives Matter, fossil-fuel divestment advocates, Dreamers, Parkland demonstrators, and Democratic Socialists of America are all examples of movements led or controlled by young people. None of the topics in which they coordinate are new. For decades, there has been police abuse, mass incarceration, climate change, deportations, gun crime, austerity, and widespread injustice. These organizations, on the other hand, are approaching them with renewed vigor.
Young American Jews have also taken up the cause. In recent years, a the number of people have joined organizations such as IfNotNow and Jewish Voice for Peace to mobilize against Israel’s occupation and stand in solidarity with Palestinians. They seek to reclaim a more radical Jewish political culture, alienated by the rightward drift of many American Jewish institutions. They’ve staged direct actions outside Jewish Federations, urging Democrats to condemn Israeli policies and actions in the West Bank and Gaza. They’ve formed alliances with Palestinian and Muslim-American organizations already active in anti-occupation activism, and they march in support of other anti-police violence, deportation, and injustice movements. They don’t have a unified position on how to settle the conflict—after all, it’s up to Palestinians and Israelis to decide—but they do want to create a movement of American Jews who will fight for the end of the occupation. One IfNotNow banner reads, “Jews won’t be free until Palestinians are free.” This new generation would be unable to alter Jewish institutions on its own. They, like so many other young activists today, still live in an environment created by their parents, and the challenge ahead of them is as much about persuasion as it is about direct action. But, as Hillel put it, if not now, then when?
