Professor Dillon Pickle is a fictional character who appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and spin-offs. Sonic Universe was an American comic book series based on Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog that was released by Archie Comics in partnership with Sega. It is a spin-off of the same-named comic book series, and it shares continuity with that title. In a wide range of species, effective control of the sonic hedgehog (Shh) signaling pathway is needed for normal growth. Shh aggregates must form on the surface of producing cells for proper Shh signaling to occur. Shh aggregates then diffuse away and are recognized by receiving cells in the developing embryo. Several hypotheses have been suggested to understand how these aggregates develop and what role they play in the overall signaling process. We use nonlinear ordinary differential equations to formulate and analyze a mathematical model of Shh aggregation in order to better understand the function of these mechanisms in the overall signaling process. Multimerisation, interaction with heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPG), and binding with lipoproteins are all factors in the formation of Shh aggregates. We show that the Shh aggregates produced on the generating cell surface have a size distribution that resembles an exponential distribution, which agrees with experimental results. This exponential distribution is resilient to parameter shifts, and thus to variations in the processes by which Shh is recruited by HSPGs and lipoproteins, according to a thorough sensitivity study of our model. The research shows how long it takes for different sized Shh aggregates to shape and how important this is for Shh diffusion.
