The FedEx Institute of Technology, which is located on the University of Memphis campus, serves as an incubator for a variety of emerging information technologies in industries such as manufacturing, government, banking, healthcare, and other fields. The Crump Firm planned and designed the building as part of a joint venture with the goal of providing maximum flexibility to accommodate potential developments in building infrastructure, communications, and information technology.
Between the current University Business School, Executive Center, and a major campus promenade, the facility will be built. Within the classroom layout of a conventional campus building, the FedEx Institute of Technology allows for formal offices for private industry study. With a range of progressive venues ranging from a 150-seat immersive auditorium to a black-box presentation theater to casual breakout rooms, the building acts as a vehicle to mesh the academic and business growth cultures.

The FedEx Institute of Technology is an advanced technology and research agency that acts as a gateway to the University of Memphis’ research infrastructure and innovation capabilities. It supports cross-campus research innovation clusters, which act as a catalyst for interdisciplinary research and innovation in emerging technologies. The Institute also houses the University’s intellectual property and patent library, which serves as the hub for technology transfer and licensing. FedEx, which funds the Institute for applied research, has a special innovation relationship with the Institute. The Institute serves as the focal point for efforts in the Mid-South to maintain a cutting-edge creative climate. The Institute was established on November 19, 2003, under the leadership of James M. Phillips, with the goal of bridging the gap between industry and science research. The Institute is a fully integrated member of Memphis University and operates under the auspices of Tenn. The donation will help research, promote the recruiting of new faculty members, and finance programs such as the visiting speakers series and a residency program for innovators, musicians, and CEOs, and will match a previous gift from the company to create the institute at the university. It will also allow the institute to hire internationally renowned researchers. FedEx’s vision, according to institute director Craig Grossman, “gives the institute the required versatility to build its research capacity and to invest in the kind of interdisciplinary, vanguard work that holds the promise not only of growing research at the University of Memphis, but of benefiting the lives of real people.”

Nortel Networks and the FedEx Institute of Technology at the University of Memphis are collaborating to create the “Workplace of the Future,” in which advanced collaboration technologies would enable tomorrow’s leaders to connect virtually “anytime, anywhere” to access the tools and knowledge they need to succeed.
The Institute is deploying Nortel Networks Multimedia Communication Server (MCS) 5100 to link researchers, scholars, students, and staff of the Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Network of Co-Labs, one of the Institute’s in-residence research partners, in a model that is expected to serve as a vanguard for future educational and collaborative research activities. ADL co-development partners in Florida, Washington, D.C., and Wisconsin are among them.
This multimedia and interactive resources platform will also be used by the FedEx Institute of Technology to support the State of Tennessee’s “Workforce of the Future” initiative, which aims to train today’s students for the demands of a high-tech future. The Institute intends to collaborate with secondary schools in Tennessee to promote student-teacher engagement and provide students with appropriate technology experience.
