Johnson Brothers was a British tableware manufacturer and exporter known for being one of the first to introduce “semi-porcelain” tableware to the market. From the 1890s to the 1960s, it was one of the most prosperous Staffordshire potteries, producing tableware, much of which was exported to the United States. They were also well-known for their big bathroom ceramics. Some of the designs, such as “Eternal Beau,” “Dawn,” “Old Britain Castles,” and “Historic America,” became well-known and are still in use today. The company’s success was attributed in part to its ability to recognize and pursue trends that appealed to its American customers, as well as the high quality of its designs, which were created by professional artists. It was founded in 1883 and was a member of the Wedgwood Group from 1968 to 2015. Johnson Brothers’ production was halted after the Wedgwood Group was purchased by Fiskars in 2015. [number four]
The name of the company is derived from the names of its members. Alfred, Frederick, Henry, and Robert were the four original “Johnson Brothers.” Alfred Meakin, their father, married the daughter of a master potter. Alfred and Frederick Johnson started production in 1883 at the Charles Street Works, a defunct pottery in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, which they had bought at a bankruptcy auction. They began by specializing in the production of long-lasting earthenware known as “White Granite.” This venture’s success resulted in rapid growth. The Rev. Henry Johnson joined them in 1888, and a fourth brother, Robert Johnson, joined them ten years later.

Tiny house hunters: intervention (parody)
I’m ecstatic to share my most recent and greatest Estate Sale find! I’ve had my eye on a package of Johnson Brothers Friendly Village dishes for a while, but I’m not willing to pay full price for them (as usual). I missed out on a collection at a big Antique Estate Sale about a month ago, but I recently saw a small set at my local Antique/Junk Mall.
When I saw a complete collection of the Friendly Village at a sale that began yesterday, I nearly died. What was curious was that this was a house/condo that my Real Estate friend had told me about about 4-5 months earlier and wanted me to stage. It didn’t work out (for a variety of reasons), but I gave her the names of a few reputable Estate Sale companies who could sell the contents after the house was sold. This house was brimming with lovely decorative accents and furnishings. I used to find Estate Sales odd because I knew that the situations in which the products were sold were always sad. However, I now consider it recycling, since I am reviving someone else’s treasures rather than purchasing new pieces.
