This radio has a lot of positive attributes. The all-metal case is sturdy, if a little heavy. The FX-9A could be a good choice if you need a rugged rig for mobile operations. The front-facing speaker makes it simple to hear, and the audio obtained is very good. The radio is really simple to use. There is a menu that is not readily apparent. When you press and hold the round BAND button, a menu appears that allows you to customize CW operation by changing the keyer mode, CW delay, sidetone frequency, and so on. On a black backdrop, the blue OLED display is transparent and easy to read. The rig has a speech processor, and the audio transmitted has enough “punch.” It gets a lot of positive press on the radio.

Fx 9a fldigi cable hookup

Finally, I took the FX-9A out from under the desk to give it another go on 20 meters because the bands are very active tonight. I hooked up the paddle, changed the voltage to 18 wpm, set the power output to low (5w), and used the windom to call CQ. Was I being heard when I sent out a few CQ’s? According to the reverse beacon, I was:
Apart from the odd cw sidetone from the speaker, missing characters while sending cw, and YL shouting from the living room “hey what are you doing in there?” my dual band VHF/UHF radio was actually breaking squelch on the SO-50 downlink UHF frequency while I was sending code with the FX-9A.
I’ve been meaning to put an SDR on the FX-9A and search for spurious pollution, but haven’t had the chance yet. We don’t have cable or satellite television and instead rely on internet-based services like Netflix and Android TV, but the FX-9A was sending out insane lines across the TV at 5 watts, plus the UHF rigs’ squelch was being activated, which means the transmitter isn’t very clean, even at low power settings.
