We seek high-impact approaches in which assisting a particular group of people—for example, journalists, civil society, or activists—makes the internet and society stronger and safer for all. Our focus areas discuss some of the most difficult issues that open societies face.
The rise of toxic language on the internet, as well as the chilling impact that toxicity has on free speech and culture, is the subject of our third topic. We’ll look at how artificial intelligence will help publishers and forums host better discussions and provide more room for people to share their thoughts online.
The current face of violent white nationalist movements is explored in our second issue. The Current investigates global trends in terrorist attacks and what can be done to combat this rising threat through first-person interviews and quantitative analysis.
Our first issue delves into the mechanics of misinformation campaigns. These campaigns, like their countermeasures, are becoming more complex. Learn how analysts and technologists are coming up with new ways to uncover and combat these efforts.

Internet access is expanding at a breakneck pace, offering exponential advancements in education, economic empowerment, and personal health. The changes in influence, however, are more profound than these individual and collective benefits. The international framework is now characterized on both physical and digital fronts, as the environment has become multi-dimensional. Individuals who aim to use technology to question the status quo would benefit disproportionately from the latter. Although unprecedented citizen empowerment is taking place, the same global problems that have plagued our planet for centuries—terrorism, conflict, repression, and sectarian violence—are boiling over into the digital realm in unprecedented ways. States and non-state actors are using technology to repress people and suppress free speech, from China’s Great Firewall to Russia’s troll armies, from the Syrian Electronic Army to ISIS’ propaganda machine. Simply looking at international affairs through a physical-world prism would no longer suffice. Only a comprehensive—physical and digital—approach will allow us to face old challenges in new realms as power and politics change.

Jared has always been interested in foreign affairs. It can be traced back to when his paternal grandmother told him about her adventures in Cuba and Iran when he was a young child. Indeed, Jared grew up to write his own story in those areas, as well as many others. Jared was not only an eloquent student in high school, but he was also well-known for his athletic abilities. He used to be the star of their school’s football team. Jared paints while he’s not playing. Neither of these pastimes, however, outweighed his passion for politics.
Africa is probably one of Jared’s favorite places on the planet. In reality, he fell in love with the country’s language on his first visit. He insisted on hiring a Swahili tutor from his parents. Jared was able to communicate in Swahili, Arabic, and other Persian languages.
Jared was lucky enough to win a Rhodes scholarship after completing his degree at Stanford, allowing him to attend Oxford. Apart from his academic success, Jared had the opportunity to show that he was more than his geeky side. He traveled to Iran and met with the world’s most feared militant groups, seeing their non-violent side.
