Motown live – jesse powell “you”
Jesse Powell is a talented singer who has shown flashes of creativity, but he has lacked consistent material and quality to match his evident vocal ability. Despite the fact that he recorded a handful of genuinely great soul songs (arguably some of the best Soul tracks of the late 1990s and early 2000s), his releases’ frustratingly inconsistent style and consistency have kept him “under the radar” of many soul music fans and radio programmers.
Powell was born and raised in Gary, Indiana, and spent his childhood and adolescence singing with his musical family in their local church (his sisters Tamara and Trina later recorded for Sony Records). He then met Carl Roland, a writer/producer, and the two formed a musical partnership that led them to California in search of a record deal. Powell was discovered by record executive Louis Silas (of New Edition fame) at an L.A. artist showcase in 1994, and he was signed to his Silas label with MCA as part of a distribution contract.
Powell’s self-titled debut was released in 1996, and “Everything I Need” was a minor R&B hit. Powell had a crystal clear, powerful tenor voice, and it seemed he could grow into a solid, classy soul singer, even though the material was somewhat conventional and his vocal style was not yet distinctive. The album’s medley of Enchantment’s “Gloria” and “It’s You That I Need” was the obvious highlight, despite the fact that it included new material penned by a variety of experienced contemporary songwriters. The medley was an excellent cover that showed what the young singer could do with solid content, despite being essentially a note for note copy of the original versions (even provided by longtime Enchantment mentor Michael Stokes).

“I Wasn’t With It” (the song that first introduced me to Jesse Powell), “You” (my aunt’s wedding song, and a lovely one at that), and my personal favorite “Bout It, Bout It” are the three singles that come to mind when I think of Jesse Powell.
