Frederick Albert Mitchell-Hedges discovered the Mitchell-Hedges Skull (also known as the Crystal Skull of Lubantuun[1], “Skull of Doom,” and Skull of Ah Puch) in the mid-1920s. The discovery was recorded in Indiana Jones’ lecture notes.
The Mitchell-Hedges Skull, carved from a single block of quartz into a precise approximation of a small human’s cranium, predates the Maya and Olmec cultures in Central America. According to legend, the Skull was created by the Atlanteans, but it may have existed before them and the other antediluvian civilizations.
Despite this, the skull ultimately came into the hands of the Maya, who established the House of Skulls priesthood/cult about the year 700, believing that the artifact was the Skull of Ah Puch, the god of sacrifice. According to the priests, the skull could concentrate the user’s thoughts in order to destroy.
When Indiana Jones and Harold Oxley were at the University of Chicago, they were fascinated with the Mitchell-Hedges Skull. Oxley’s fascination with the Skull lasted until adulthood, and he was especially fascinated by its supernatural properties.

Mitchell-Hedges was born in London in 1882 and attended school until he was sixteen years old. He worked for his father, John Hedges, in his stockbroking firm when he was younger. Although Frederick showed an early interest in exploring, John was opposed to his son traveling, creating a split in their relationship. Frederick married Lillian Clarke in 1906 after a trip to Canada. They mainly lived apart and adopted Canadian orphan Anne Marie Le Guillon, who is now known as Anna Mitchell-Hedges, despite the fact that they had no children of their own. Mitchell-Hedges traveled well into his later years, passing away in 1959. (5)
