I’m excited to be working on a new project with Jones Day, one of the world’s largest and highest-quality law firms, for their Dallas office and the Dallas Regional Chamber. Jones Day is one of my favorite clients, with whom I’ve worked for more than 25 years.
It’s difficult not to be fascinated by the people of Dallas’ contagious enthusiasm for their neighborhood. When the Partner-in-Charge of Jones Day’s Dallas office tells you about the many opportunities available in Dallas, it’s even more impressive. When four of the country’s top CEOs join her in this intense civic dedication, the effect is pretty strong.
We were fortunate enough to interview Doug Parker, CEO of American Airlines; Jim Lentz, CEO of Toyota Motor North America; David Seaton, Chairman and CEO of Fluor Corporation; and Hilda Galvan, Partner-in-Charge of Jones Day Dallas and the incoming Chair of the Dallas Regional Chamber on this project, thanks to the generosity and commitment of both Jones Day and the Dallas Regional Chamber.

Blandin & Rice, the first version of what would become Jones Day, was established in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1893 by Edward J. Blandin and William Rice. Rice was assassinated in mysterious circumstances in 1910, putting a stop to Blandin and Rice’s promising start in industry… But we’re sure he’d be comforted by the fact that, 110 years later (and several name changes later), the company is comfortably positioned in BigLaw’s upper echelons, with global sales in the billions and 42 offices around the world (24 of which are outside the US).
Junior associates at the firm’s Cleveland headquarters were swift to proclaim the firm to be “the biggest and finest of all the law firms in the area.” A quick look at Chambers USA reveals the company has seven top rankings in Ohio, including commercial litigation, intellectual property, and healthcare, as well as transactional practices like banking and finance and corporate/M&A. It also has strong regional rankings in California, Georgia, Illinois, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, and the District of Columbia (where the firm’s largest office is located). It is a national pioneer in bankruptcy, manufacturing, retail, and labor & jobs law – for a complete list, go to chambers.com.

Jones Day is a heavy hitter with a hand in most major fields of law and a globally recognised prowess in litigation. The firm has 43 branches across five continents in 18 countries. Antitrust, appellate litigation, capital markets, international law, IP, labor and welfare, M&A, private equity, insurance, and securities litigation are only a few of the firm’s thriving activities.
Jones Day was founded in Cleveland in 1893 by Judge Edwin Blandin and William Lowe Rice to serve manufacturers and transportation companies in the Midwest. Jones Day began its growth by opening a Washington, DC, office in 1946, making it one of the first companies in the country to follow a corporate management system. Since its inception, the company has experienced steady expansion, adding hundreds of offices around the world.
Our summer associate classes are the Firm’s most significant pipeline. We stayed committed to our summer associates throughout the summer of 2020, and we made the early decision to execute our 10-week summer associate program remotely. 208 students from 54 law schools participated in our curriculum through our 18 U.S. offices. They came from 29 different states to engage in their offices’ summer programs. Our firmwide and office recruitment teams worked tirelessly to rebuild the program from the ground up, ensuring that our summer associates had the same diverse summer experience as in previous years, including the same opportunities to meet our attorneys, preview jobs at Jones Day, and learn about our community, history, and values.
