On June 17th, National Eat Your Vegetables Day coincides with National Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month. Today’s celebration is another chance to remind everyone to keep up with this vital component of a balanced diet.
Vegetables can be eaten in a number of ways, whether as part of a main meal or as a snack. Each vegetable, of course, has its own nutritional profile. They usually contain a small amount of protein or fat, as well as varying amounts of vitamins like Vitamin A, Vitamin K, and Vitamin B6, as well as provitamins, dietary minerals, and carbohydrates. They also produce a number of other phytochemicals, including antioxidants, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and anticarcinogenic compounds. Furthermore, many vegetables contain fiber, which is important for gastrointestinal health. Another advantage is that vegetables contain vital nutrients that are needed for healthy hair and skin.
It is possible to reduce the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes by eating a diet that contains the recommended quantities of fruits and vegetables. These diets can also aid in the reduction of bone loss and the prevention of some cancers. Furthermore, the potassium given can aid in the prevention of kidney stones.

There is concern in the United States that states with historically low case numbers, or those that have started to re-open, will see an increase. At least seven states have regular reported case counts that are at least 100% higher than two weeks ago. Meanwhile, in Beijing, China is fighting an epidemic that has sparked fears of a second wave. In recent days, the Chinese government has taken drastic steps to contain the outbreak, including fencing off neighbourhoods, setting up security checkpoints outside residential compounds, prohibiting close contacts of infected individuals from traveling, and imposing quarantine on anyone leaving the city.
The international humanitarian community is keeping a close eye on outbreaks in refugee camps. In certain cases, these heavily populated, low-resource areas provide a perfect setting for a major and rapid eruption. The world’s largest refugee camp is of particular concern: parts of Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar have been put under lockdown for the past week as the number of cases in the district continues to rise3. So far, the Bangladeshi government has reported over 90,000 cases across the country, including over 1,400 cases in Cox’s Bazar and 38 cases in the refugee camp. A general shortage of masks, clean water, and soap is exacerbating the situation.
