During a protest on Sunday, nine out of thirteen members of the Minneapolis City Council declared their intention to dissolve the city’s police force and redirect funds to a new public safety system. “Decades of police reform efforts have shown that the Minneapolis Police Department cannot be reformed, and will never be held responsible for its conduct,” the council members said in a statement. They said they’d “start the process of disbanding the Minneapolis Police Department” as a result. George Floyd, an unarmed black man, died almost two weeks ago after a white Minneapolis police officer jammed his knee into Floyd’s neck for almost nine minutes. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has stated that the police department needs to reform, but he does not advocate for its elimination.

The last two weeks have been a practice in confronting unsettling facts. It began with another troubling reminder of the low importance we place on black life, followed by disturbing shows of police units eager to crack heads with cameras rolling, all against the backdrop of a disturbing debate of how to fix the country’s inherent human inequity. The ostensible leader of all US citizens declares, “When the looting begins, the shooting begins.”
There have been salves among the harrowing pictures. The outpouring of support from people of all backgrounds and from around the country has dominated the images we’ve seen since George Floyd’s death. I’ve been proud to see so many of my fellow staff members come out strongly on the topics of police violence, structural racism, and how we can meaningfully alter behaviors to do our individual parts in making a better tomorrow possible over the weekend: I’ve been proud to watch so many of my fellow staff members come out strongly on the topics of police brutality, institutional racism, and how we can meaningfully alter behaviors to do our individual parts in making a better tomorrow possible. It’s inspiring and, to be honest, humbling.
