Liberia’s currency has been the dollar (currency code LRD) since 1943. Between 1847 and 1907, it was also the country’s currency. To differentiate it from other dollar-denominated currencies, it is generally abbreviated with the sign $, or alternatively L$ or LD$. It’s broken down into 100 cents.
In 1847, the first Liberian dollar was issued. Until 1907, when Liberia adopted the British West African pound, which was pegged to sterling, it was pegged to the US dollar at par and circulated alongside it.
Copper 1 and 2 cent coins were issued in 1847 and 1862, and they were the only Liberian coins until 1896, when a complete coinage of 1, 2, 10, 25, and 50 cent coins was introduced. In 1906, the last issues were printed.
Following the coup d’état on April 12, 1980, Americo-Liberians fled with suitcases full of USD paper, causing a currency shortage. Liberian $5 coins were minted to fix this issue. The seven-sided coins were the same size and weight as the one-dollar coin, preventing corrupt members of Liberia’s elite from fleeing with the country’s capital.

Until 1907, the LRD was pegged to the US dollar, after which it was attached to another currency at parity.
Liberians continue to use the USD alongside their own currency despite the fact that the two are no longer pegged. In the LRD, smaller transactions—those worth less than $5—are processed. The USD, on the other hand, is used to pay for sales above that number. It’s not unusual for merchants to give you change in both US and Liberian currency. Liberia is one of the world’s poorest nations, with a high rate of unemployment. With a heavy government tax burden and weak fiscal stability, it is ranked 165th on the 2020 Index of Economic Freedom. According to the World Bank, the country’s economy will contract by 1.4 percent in 2019, after rising by 1.2 percent in 2018.
