A former small underground Fluorspar mine located 24 km SSW of Benson in the SE 14 sec. 26 & NE 14 sec. 35, T.18S., R.19E. The film was made in 1946. Cooper Shapely, Jr. of Benson is the owner. Mr. C.L. Whitelock was also the owner and operator at some point in the past.
In Precambrian Pinal Schist, mineralization is coarse-grained, banded, greenish fluorspar with thick and vuggy quartz walls in a shear-type fissure vein striking N30W and dipping 80S. More than 80 percent CaF2 is found in ore shoots that are 2.5 feet thick, 25 feet long, and 30 feet deep. Fluorspar in fissure veins in contoured and sheared quartz-sericite schist, with the schist foliation striking N15E and dipping 80SE.

The Texas State School of Mines and Metallurgy, which became the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) in 1914, was organized as the Texas State School of Mines and Metallurgy. There is still a mine shaft on campus, and Paydirt Pete, a prospector from the mining industry, is the mascot of the school’s sports teams. The UTEP Miners and Lady Miners are the other names for the squads.
The single star on the Texas state flag is a nod to the “lone star” on the 1836 Texas National Standard. Texas as an independent republic and its fight for independence from Mexico were symbolized by a single gold star on a blue background.
George Eliot’s novel “Silas Marner: The Weaver of Raveloe” was first published in 1861. There’s a fantastic BBC TV adaptation of the story (on PBS) starring Ben Kingsley in the title role and Patsy Kensit as Eppie, the young orphaned girl who Marner adopts.
The historical name for the northwestern region of the Indian subcontinent is “Hindustan.” The name literally means “Land of the Hindus.” A kind blog reader informed me that the term “Hindustan” is disliked by some in India due to its religious connotation.

(Production) Comment: ORE WITH AS MUCH AS 200 OZ/TON AG AND 30 PERCENT PB WAS MINED FROM SEVERAL LEVELS BY 1890. THE MINE HAD BEEN DEVELOPED FOR Around $40,000 BY 1897, BUT PRODUCTION WAS Just A FEW THOUSAND DOLLARS. SMELTERS RECEIVED TEST SHIPMENTS OF ORE IN 1913, 1943, AND 1969. (MOEN, 1973, P. 25).
Comment (Geology): THE VEIN IS IN THE CONCONULLY PLUTON’S MEDIUM- TO COARSE-GRAINED GRANODIORITE AND QUARTZ MONZONITE. THE PLUTON HAS BEEN HYDROTHERMALLY ALTERED NEAR CONCONULLLY ON ITS EASTERN EDGE (STOFFEL, 1990, P. 24).
