CAMDEN, New Jersey – U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito revealed today that a man from Cumberland County, New Jersey, was arrested on charges of defrauding more than 30 victims into wiring money to him and his conspirators after he and his conspirators met and wooed the victims on online dating sites.
One count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud has been filed against Rubbin Sarpong, 35, of Millville, New Jersey. His first court appearance is scheduled for today in Camden federal court before U.S. Magistrate Judge Joel Schneider.
Sarpong and his conspirators, some of whom live in Ghana, allegedly engaged in an online romance scam that defrauded victims in New Jersey and elsewhere between January 2016 and September 3, 2019. Sarpong and the other conspirators used fake or stolen identities to build dating profiles on various dating websites, posing as US military personnel stationed overseas. They used dating websites to contact victims and then claimed to be in a romantic relationship with them. The conspirators asked victims for money after forming virtual romantic relationships with them on online dating sites and by email, ostensibly to pay for the shipping of gold bars to the United States. Despite the fact that the stories differed, the most common argument made by Sarpong and the conspirators was that they were military personnel stationed in Syria who got, rescued, or were awarded gold bars. Many victims were informed that their money would be returned once the gold bars arrived in the United States by the conspirators.
