The manager began by looking back at previous seasons. “China has the world’s largest cultivated area and the world’s largest production. The planted area here makes up about 52.6 percent of the total global output area. The total output reached a record high of 3 million tons in 2018, accounting for approximately 61.34 percent of global production. The trees did not completely recover in the 2019 season due to over-fruiting. This, combined with unfavorable weather conditions, resulted in a significant drop in production. The fruit-setting rate has recovered in the 2020 season, and growers’ enthusiasm for planting has increased. As a result, production increased to about 2.55 million tons.”
Lychees are usually shipped by low-cost sea freight. Charter flights have increased in frequency over the last three years. These flights will cut the logistics time from 30 days to around 2 days, improving the freshness of the fruit and making Chinese lychees more competitive in the international market. Currently, chartered flights primarily carry luxury varieties such as Xianjinfeng, Jinggang Hongnuo, and Lingfengnuo. Popular varieties including Heiye, Feizixiao, and Yuhebao are still predominantly transported by sea.

Nina Kraviz became the first foreign DJ to perform an official set on China’s Great Wall in May 2018. Josh Feola visited her historic sunrise set and examines how techno is gaining traction in China’s complex artistic community. Frankie Casillo took the photos.
A group of diehard techno fans managed to stay on their feet as dawn broke over Mutianyu, one of the best-kept parts of the Great Wall of China. Some had spent the day partying at the Great Wall Festival, an outdoor rave held at a campsite an hour away. It was a miraculous feat of endurance for them.
Her live-streamed appearance atop one of the Great Wall’s famous watchtowers made history. A special agreement had been made with Mutianyu’s cable car operators, who arranged for a small party of 30 people to make the long journey to the top of the Wall under the cover of darkness.
Nina then spun a collection of contemplative, deep techno as the sun rose over the mountains, revealing the Great Wall — which, despite the early hour, was totally devoid of visitors — reaching as far as the eye could see outside her makeshift DJ booth.
