The Food Bank of North Central Arkansas partners with the national nonprofit Share Our Strength to deliver Cooking Matters® as part of the No Kid Hungry movement to end childhood hunger in America. Cooking Matters® teaches participants how to shop better, make healthy decisions, and prepare balanced meals at home so their children get the nutrition they need.
This initiative demonstrates methods for getting the best nutrition available on a small budget, including a long-term solution to hunger and inadequate nutrition. Learn how to make healthier meals for one or more people on every budget. The six-week hands-on courses are tailored to the age range of participants. Please fill out the information request form if you are a person or family looking for a class, or if your community would like to host a class.

💘 Meals on wheels

Last week, I posed the question of how it is possible that children in Virginia go hungry and suffer from malnutrition despite our nation’s robust social safety net. Is it true that government assistance payments are insufficient? Is it the fault of food deserts? Is it true that people waste their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits? Is there something else going on here? The theories we’ve heard from the usual suspects don’t add up.
The article elicited a comment from Robin Mathews, a former charity employee who worked with SNAP and WIC recipients for many years. She says, “I feel like I’ve seen pretty much everything.” Here are some of the main points she makes in answer to the questions I posed in the article. (Her remarks have been lightly edited and reprinted here.)
Eligibility for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Unemployment is low, but the income requirements are strict; a single parent with two children working full-time at Amazon for $15 an hour will not be eligible for SNAP or WIC, implying that these services are designed to help the “working poor.”
