I read Quentin Meillassoux’s criticism of correlationism as a true critique of transcendentalism and the transcendental approach in this article. I do so by looking at the two correlationist rejoinders in Meillassoux’s After Finitude’s English version. The first retort comes from an idealist who defends himself with adumbrations. Via Edmund Husserl’s Crisis of European Sciences and Transcendental Phenomenology, this dependence on adumbrations will be seen to be transcendentally implicated. The clear engagement with the transcendental process that emerges from the transcendentalist’s rejoinder is then the subject of my discussion. When taken as a whole, I hope to persuade the reader that transcendentalism is at the heart of correlationism.

There was nothing at first, and things have just gotten worse since then. You may be aware of this but choose to ignore it. What is the reason for this? That’s because you have a mind capable of conjuring up useful illusions. What gives that this is possible? Since you were born with a brain that can build a self-model that can conceal information from ‘you.’ Some people will benefit from this rather than others. Some of us are mentally ill, and we chip away at our illusions for various reasons. In such cases, one can turn to philosophy, which provides comfort (or so I’ve been told), mysticism, which deliberately provides nothing, or aesthetics, which is a kind of self-externalization that allows the mind’s eye to wander elsewhere. Overall, however, the armor on offer is rather flimsy. Mirror (philosophy), blacken (mysticism), or accept contingency are the choices (aesthetics). For the time being, let’s go with the latter. By accepting contingency, I mean that aesthetics entails choosing and following a particular goal for intuitive rather than logical reasons. This is an attempt to learn contingency in your bones.

When Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, were assassinated in Sarajevo by a Yugoslav nationalist called Gavrilo Princip, Paul J Ennis was just six years old. Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Archduke of Austria-Este was a member of the imperial Habsburg family and the presumed heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne from 1896 until his death. His assassination in Sarajevo prompted Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia, which set in motion a chain of events that saw Austria-allies Hungary’s and Serbia declare war on each other, igniting World War I.
The British passenger liner RMS Titanic sinks in the North Atlantic at 2:20 a.m., two hours and forty minutes after striking an iceberg, when Paul J Ennis was four years old. Just 710 of the 2,227 passengers and crew members on board make it out alive. The RMS Titanic sank in the North Atlantic Ocean in the early hours of April 15, 1912, after colliding with an iceberg on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City. More than 1,500 people died, making it one of the worst commercial maritime disasters in modern history. The RMS Titanic was the second of three Olympic-class ocean liners owned by the White Star Line and was the largest ship afloat at the time it entered operation. It was designed in Belfast by the Harland and Wolff shipyard. Her architect, Thomas Andrews, perished in the tragedy.

Babe Ruth becomes the first baseball player to hit 500 home runs in his career with a home run at League Park in Cleveland, Ohio, when Paul J Ennis is 21 years old. From 1914 to 1935, George Herman “Babe” Ruth Jr. was an American professional baseball player who played 22 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB). He was known as “The Bambino” and “The Sultan of Swat” throughout his MLB career, which he started as a great left-handed pitcher for the Boston Red Sox before becoming a slugging outfielder for the New York Yankees. Ruth set several MLB batting records, including career home runs (714), runs batted in (2,213), bases on balls (2,062), slugging percentage (.690), and on-base plus slugging (OPS) (1.164), all of which are still held as of 2018. Ruth is widely recognized as one of America’s greatest sports icons, and many believe him to be the greatest baseball player of all time. Ruth was one of the “first five” founding members of the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936.
