Palau is a Pacific island nation situated in the western Pacific Ocean. Geographically, it is part of Micronesia’s broader island group. The country’s population of about 21,000 people is dispersed across 250 islands that make up the Caroline Islands’ western chain. Koror is the most populated of the islands. Indonesia, the Philippines, and the Federated States of Micronesia all share maritime borders with the islands. Ngerulmud is the capital of Melekeok State, which is located on the nearby island of Babeldaob.
Originally settled about 3,000 years ago, the country was most likely settled by refugees from the Philippines or Indonesia. The islands were first discovered by the Spanish in 1522, when the Trinidad, the flagship of Ferdinand Magellan’s circumnavigation voyage, spotted two small islands and named them “San Juan.” In 1885, the island was annexed by the Spanish East Indies.
In the 18th century, British merchants were frequent visitors to Palau, which was accompanied by an increase in Spanish presence in the 19th century. In 1899, Spain sold Palau and the rest of the Caroline Islands to Germany after losing the Spanish–American War.

Since 1992, the Republic of Palau has produced a large number of silver and gold collectors’ coins commemorating a wide range of subjects. Palau uses the US dollar and its coins for general circulation, so Palauan coins are only intended for the foreign collector market.
Palau has taken some risks with its coin problems, with eye-catching designs and multi-colored coins aplenty, as well as novel concepts like an oyster-shaped coin with actual pearl inlays. A hole or cut-out is a strategic part of the design on other coins, such as one honoring the Hubble telescope. The Palau collectible coin market has a lot to recommend it.

Palau is a multi-island archipelago in the northern Pacific with over 200 islands. Only eight of these islands are populated, but they are known for their lush jungles and diverse marine life. Collectors from all over the world seek out this island nation’s collection of collectible and commemorative coins.
Over the years, a number of famous Palau coins have been issued. The 2012 Kremlin Mineral Art Silver 2 oz coin and the Palau 2016 Bavarian Purity Law Silver Coin are two examples. The Four Leaf Clover coins, which feature a beautiful colorized illustration of a four leaf clover on a silver coin, are perhaps the most famous version from this series.

The Great White Shark is the largest shark in the world. The Silver Coin features an iconic scene from Steven Spielberg’s popular film “Jaws,” which has been turned into a three-dimensional representation on the coin using advanced Smartminting technology.
“Jaws,” Spielberg’s first blockbuster, was released in 1975 and served as a satire on politicians who put human lives in danger for the profit of a booming tourist region/industry.
The film was more than just a tale about a “man-eating sea monster”; it was a milestone in cinematic history, ushering in an age of animal horror films and summer blockbusters. At the time, water shots were considered innovative.
