Sinclair Oil Corporation was established by Harry F. Sinclair on May 1, 1916, as the Sinclair Oil and Refining Corporation, by combining the assets of eleven small petroleum companies.
Sinclair Oil and Refining Corporation, Sinclair Gulf Corporation, and 26 other associated companies were restructured into Sinclair Consolidated Oil Corporation by Harry F. Sinclair in September 1919.
The new company was renamed Consolidated Oil Corporation in 1932. It was renamed Sinclair Oil Corporation in 1943. (5)
Sinclair sold the remaining interest in its pipeline subsidiary to Standard Oil Company (Indiana) for $72.5 million at the start of the Great Depression (Standard Oil had purchased a 50 percent interest in the pipeline subsidiary in 1921).
With these funds, Sinclair retired a number of promissory notes and prepared to weather the Depression with the remaining cash supply, which included an additional US$33.5 million from an additional common stock issue.

This antique Sinclair Motor Oil porcelain sign from the 1930s is noteworthy because it is one of the earliest examples of Sinclair Oil Company’s iconic apatosaurus. This Sinclair Motor Oil antique porcelain sign is a double-sided, lollipop-style curbside sign that would have been used as ads at gas stations and car shops throughout the time period. The sign is not only original, but it still has its original cast iron stand.
The sign reads “SINCLAIR” in bold white lettering with a black drop shadow outline on an exceptionally rare red and white backdrop. In red lettering, it says “PENNSYLVANIA MOTOR OIL” just below. The sign’s lower half shows a black apatosaurus dinosaur walking over a tar pit, with the words “MELLOWED 100 MILLION YEARS” in white lettering behind the dinosaur. The sign still has all of its original wear, but it’s in great shape for a nearly 90-year-old sign.
When we say “Museum Quality” or “Historically Correct,” we’re referring to our world-class production process. Initial labels, badges, glass with anomalies, natural aged patinas, and everything else that makes a vintage item collectible are all preserved. Both age, wear, and tear is proudly displayed to highlight each item’s unique charm while maintaining non-structural damage.

Dinosaurs were first used in Sinclair ads in 1930, thanks to the advertisement authors at Sinclair. They were promoting lubricants made from crude oil that was thought to have originated during the period when dinosaurs roamed the earth.
Dinosaur fossils are uncommon, making research and classification difficult. Since 1903, paleontologists have debated if the Brontosaurus is a separate genus from the Apatosaurus or whether it is the same species. Sinclair has followed the scientific consensus, which currently supports calling DINO an Apatosaurus – but new research may change that in the future.
DINO debuted as a balloon in The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1963 and soon became a crowd favorite, earning him the title of Honorary Member of the Museum of Natural History in 1975.
For Sinclair’s Dinoland show at the 1964-1965 New York World’s Fair, DINO returned to New York with eight more of his mates, this time made of fiberglass and featuring cutting-edge animatronics.
