O. Henry’s short story “The Ransom of Red Chief” was first published in The Saturday Evening Post on July 6, 1907. It follows two men who abduct a wealthy Alabamian’s son and demand a ransom. The men eventually become insane as a result of the boy’s spoiled and hyperactive nature, and they bribe the boy’s father to return him.
Many children’s television shows have included variations of the story as one of their series, and the story and its main premise have become part of popular culture. It’s also been used as a classic example of two ultimate comic ironies: a supposed “hostage” genuinely loving his abductors and enjoying being kidnapped, and his captors receiving their just desserts by being forced to pay to get rid of him.
Many adaptations of “The Ransom of Red Chief” have been made, both directly and indirectly. The Ransom of Red Chief, starring Fred Allen and Oscar Levant (part of O. Henry’s Full House), the segment “The Ransom of Red Chief” in Leonid Gaidai’s 1962 Soviet black-and-white comedy film Strictly Business, the 1977 ABC Weekend Special episode “The Ransom of Red Chief,” and the 1984 opera Ransom of Red Chief (libretto, music, and orchestration) are all direct adaptations.
