The term “renaissance” comes from the French word “renaissance,” which means “rebirth.” A revival of interest in the values and arts of Greece and Rome led to a golden age of cultural blending and creativity from the early 14th to the late 16th centuries. The Renaissance had a profound impact on life in Western Europe. The Western European world view changed from a religious to a worldly perspective during the Renaissance. Individual human spirit and abilities grew in importance to Renaissance intellectuals. “Humanism” is the name given to this modern emphasis on an individual’s personal value.

The silver-hair renaissance with pilar gerasimo

Following the collapse of the Western Roman Empire in the fifth century, Europe entered the Middle Ages, during which the Catholic Church filled the power vacuum left in the West by the fall of the Western Roman Empire, while the Eastern Roman Empire (or Byzantine Empire) lasted for centuries in the East, being a Hellenic Eastern contrast to the Latin West. By the 12th century, the building of cathedrals, the establishment of medieval universities, and increased communication with the medieval Islamic world through Al-Andalus and Sicily, where Arabic texts on science and philosophy were translated into Latin, Western Europe was experiencing a flowering of art and learning. The Protestant Reformation, which began in the 16th century, destroyed Christian unity. A merchant class arose from city states, initially on the Italian peninsula (see Italian city-states), and Europe underwent the Renaissance from the 14th to the 17th centuries, ushering in a period of technical and artistic advancement as well as the Age of Discovery, which saw the emergence of global European empires such as Spain and Portugal.
