Veerle Roelandt, shark enthusiast and founder of “The Global Shark Conservation Initiative,” says, “Our oceans are so amazing, there is still so much to discover, we can’t keep using them as a trash can.” Jaws was just a movie, and the animal was just a plastic toy; sharks are nothing like that; don’t fear them, fear for them!
Veerle Roelandt, a passionate diver from Belgium, has always had sharks at the top of her bucket list. Vee learned about sharks’ plight during her first diving trip to Cocos Island, Costa Rica (Island of the Sharks).
Veerle: My name is Veerle Roelandt, but I go by Vee because my name is a common Flemish name that is difficult to pronounce. Few people in the world can pronounce the letters “r” and “l” after each other. As a result, we’ll just call it Vee.
Veerle: I am a diving instructor, but I do not dive for a living; it is merely a recreational activity for me. I’ve been diving for about 20 years; we used to run a dive school in addition to our other company, but health problems forced us to stop.
