Trough sinks are a very modern and versatile type of bathroom basin that are not as well known as other types of sinks. Trough sinks, for those who are unfamiliar, are bigger, single-basin sinks with two or more wash stations and, as a result, two or more faucets.
Troughs, long narrow vessels hollowed out on top and filled with water, have been used historically (and still are) to provide drinking areas for farm animals, and these sinks were inspired by them. Since the materials were inexpensive, plentiful, and sturdy, those troughs were usually hand-carved out of wood or stone. Enamel was used over cast iron in the early days of trough sinks in the house. As the market for these types of basins has increased, they have become much more sophisticated.

How to replace and install an undermount sink

Unlike other sink models, which have pre-drilled faucet holes on the rim of the fixture, an undermount sink has no accessible rim, which means you’ll have to drill holes in the countertop for the faucet. The number and location of these holes are determined by the type of faucet you have and all of the accessories you want to use with it. When a countertop comes with a premounted undermount sink—as many bathroom vanities do—the faucet holes might already be bored, but for many countertops, you’ll have to figure out where the faucet should go and drill the holes yourself.
You may have selected an undermount sink for its sophisticated simplicity, and when measuring and labeling the locations for the holes to fit the faucet and accessories, symmetry is the secret to sophistication. However, practical considerations such as available space, sink dimensions, and faucet design can force an asymmetrical approach. Don’t worry…asymmetry has its own charm. The most important thing is that the faucet guides water where you need it and that it isn’t too crowded or too close to the backsplash to keep you from turning the handle.
