Ethers are organic compounds with an ether group, which is an oxygen atom bound to two alkyl or aryl groups. They have the general formula R–O–R′, with R and R′ denoting alkyl or aryl groups, respectively. Ethers are divided into two types: simple or symmetrical ethers have the same alkyl groups on both sides of the oxygen atom, while mixed or unsymmetrical ethers have different alkyl groups on both sides of the oxygen atom. Diethyl ether (C2H5)2O, also known as Et2O, is an organic compound in the ether class with the formula (C2H5)2O. (see Pseudoelement symbols).
