Sara thought she’d found her dream job, but the excitement quickly vanished, and she’s now bored, disappointed, and fed up. She’s now hopping from one idea to the next, trying to make sure her next decision is the best one. How can you be certain of anything before taking the risk?
I do miss being my own boss, though. I miss the ease of setting my own hours and being able to go to the gym or the shops whenever I want – I don’t like the feeling of being tethered to a desk from 9 to 3 every day. It’s also been difficult to arrange childcare this summer, something I didn’t have to worry about when I was self-employed.
Also, since I’ve never had any formal training, I sometimes feel as though I’m floundering or underperforming. We make fun of my non-existent induction (my boss went on vacation the day I began, so I had to wing it through a client meeting!). I can ask the team something, and they’re always willing to help, but I don’t want to annoy them all the time.
It’s a complete disgrace. I remember thinking when I first began this job a year ago that “Finally, finally, finally. I’ve finally found it after 20+ years of searching!” But now that I’ve been there for a year, I can tell you that it’s not great. I’m no longer satisfied with waking up and doing my work.

He heads the Metacognition Group at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging at University College London, where he is a Principal Research Associate. The group’s research focuses on the processes in the adult human brain that promote conscious perception, metacognition, and decision-making.
‘There are three things incredibly difficult: steel, a diamond, and knowing oneself,’ Benjamin Franklin once said. Every decision we make, from locating the source of a subtle sound to selecting a new work, is accompanied by a sense of assurance that we have made the best decision possible. We could change our minds and reverse our decision if our trust is sufficiently poor. These preference reversals are now being used by scientists to investigate the first signs of self-awareness. Changes of mind, it turns out, are the product of a finely tuned mechanism for keeping track of our emotions.
On the topic of what it means to know oneself – and how changes of mind play a part – there are two schools of thinking. One theory is that we change our minds when we continue to consider facts after we’ve made a decision; this is known as “post-decision evidence accumulation.” Another theory is that after deciding on a course of action, the brain consciously corrects its errors by activating additional mechanisms. People with damage to the frontal lobes of the brain can be unable to ‘self-monitor’ and recognize their own mistakes.
